Fundus Photography

What is it?
Fundus Photography allows us to take a photograph of the inner surface of the eye, including the retina, optic disc and macula. The photographs are analysed by our Optometrist, aiding diagnosis and monitoring of any eye disease. Photographs are also very helpful in explaining certain eye conditions such as glaucoma, macular degeneration and genetic disorders as these can be visualized. This provides photo documentation for future reference and provides the opportunity for any photographs to be passed on to an Eye Specialist for analysis even before the patient is seen.

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)

What is an OCT?

An OCT is an edvanced eye scan for people of all ages. Similar to an ultrasound, OCT uses light rather than sound waves to see the different layers that make up the structures at the front and back of the eye. The OCT machine captures both a Fundus Photo and a cross-sectional scan at the same time.

What can the scan check for?

01

Age Related Macular Degeneration

AMD is the leading cause of blindness in the UK. OCT scans can help identify the early signs of AMD.

02

Diabetes

Over 4 million people are now diagnosed with diabetes in the UK. Diabetic Retinopathy is one of the leading causes of blindness in people of working age. An OCT scan can help detect early signs of Diabetic Retinopathy.

03

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a condition that causes damage to the optic nerve. OCT examintions can measure numerous features at the back of the eye and facilitate early diagnosis of Glaucoma.

04

Macular Holes

A Macular hole is a small hole in the macular- the part of the retina which is responsable for our central vision. These usually form during a complicated vitreous detatchment causing a hole to form. OCT scans help catch is before it is too late.
